283 of 292 people found the following review helpful.
Very pleased with this unit
By Stephen M. Charme
I have been using a Palm m515 for the past several years and was waiting for the right moment to upgrade. I purchased the TX with some reservations because Palm has had quality issues, and I wanted to avoid the aggravation I initially had with my m515. I have owned my TX for about a month and have no complaints so far.

In reading my review and other reviews, keep in mind that each person buys this unit with different expectations and uses, and what matters to one person may be irrelevant to another. With that perspective in mind, let me go over the features that I like.

The TX has a nice feel and appearance;the stylus is nicely weighted and fits snugly in the slot. The color screen is vivid and beautiful to look at. I read literally dozens of e-books each year, so screen resolution and brightness are important to me. The TX excels. Even when the brightness is dimmed to the lowest setting, which I sometimes do when reading in bed at night, reading is very easy.

Wi-Fi access is effortless. I took it on vacation and had no trouble using the wireless network at the resort where I was staying. The same is true when I use it at home. I purchased the Handmark Pocket Express software, which comes as a trial version, which I find a very convenient way to keep up with the news, sports, stocks, weather etc. when traveling. Even in my own house I use it since it is often easier to reach for my Palm TX rather than my laptop or go to my desktop. I have also ordered a cable from SupplyNet to connect my TX to my cell phone(I don’t have a bluetooth phone) when wireless is not available.

I own an ipod mini, and found that trying to use the TX as an mp3 player was not worth the bother compared to the ease of use with my ipod. There is a reason that Apple dominates the mp3 player field.

Downloading photos is easy, but they don’t look as bright and sharp as I would have liked, though the quality is still acceptable.

As other users have pointed out, the power button is too recessed and can be a bit of a nuisance to use. I seldom bother with it anyhow and use a free program called Off-It to turn the TX off, and one of the buttons at the bottom to turn it on.

When I upgraded from my m515, I did run into some compatibility problems, but this is no different than buying a new computer(and the TX is indeed a computer) and trying to download programs that are several years old. For programs that did not wind up on the TX after I synced, I simply beamed them from my m515 to the TX; some worked and some did not. I also had to beam my contact database and datebook database because for some reason they did not hotsync. I strongly recommend a free program called FileZ that enables you to manage your files, and beam databases. If you are upgrading from an older handheld, make sure that you have it installed in case you run into a problem, as I did, during the hotsync process.

Graffiti 2 is a bit different than the original Graffiti, but not a big deal to learn. If this is your first Palm, Graffiti 2 is so much easier to learn.

The TX comes with VersaMail, which unfortunately does not retrieve Hotmail. But it does retrieve email from most major internet providers, so when I travel I just use one of my other accounts. You do need a bit of technical knowledge to configure your mail settings, but once that is done, sending and retrieving messages is effortless so long as you don’t need to send or view attachments, which always has certain problems.

I strongly recommend purchasing an SD card and a well known program called BackupBuddy, which will enable you to schedule daily automatic backups to the SD card(the TX does not need to be left on to do this–my backups are at 4am each day). When I had my m515, more than once when I was on vacation and not able to hotsync, I had the unit crash and lose all the data, which I then restored from the backup on my SD card.

I use Datebook 5 instead of the built in calendar, and find that the version for the operating system on the TX has some nice extra features that I did not have when I used my m515.

For my purposes the TX is perfect, and so far has worked without any problems. You really have to decide what you are looking for in a handheld before making your purchase decision. That way you won’t be disappointed.

Update January 1, 2009: After three years and a new motherboard, my Palm TX needed a new LCD display. Rather than spending any more money for repairs or buying a new unit, I instead decided to purchase an iTouch 16 GB second generation. I have written an extensive review showing how the iTouch can be used as a pda in place of a Palm TX. Here is the link: [...]

Update November 1, 2009: I have had a great experience using my iPod Touch as a PDA in place of my Palm TX. Unless there are specific applications that you need (such as medical applications) and which exist only for the Palm TX, I would definitely NOT buy a Palm TX as a PDA, especially since the price has increased dramatically even though no improvements have been made to the OS. The iPod Touch is just a superior product in so many ways.

Update December 3, 2010: I am still using my same iPod Touch 2G as a pda and am very happy that my Palm TX days are long gone. As of this date my lengthy review of the iPod Touch and how to use it as a pda is under tab 30 of my reviews, though that number will change as I continue to write more reviews.

Update July 21, 2011: Still using iPod Touch 2G as a pda. My review of the Touch telling how to do this is currently under Tab 47 of my reviews. However, that number increases as I write additional reviews, so just note that I wrote the Touch review on January 1, 2009. That way you can always find it.

483 of 508 people found the following review helpful.
Some quirks, but really good in the end
By Eduardo Villanueva
Without being aware of its recent unveiling, I just bought a Palm T/X at Fry’s, October 15th, 2005. I was looking for a PDA with WiFi to replace my nice and useful but somehow limited Tungsten E. I’ve been using it for just a few days, so I’m not ready to give it a full 5 stars rating just yet…

First of all, WiFi works really fine and the Blazer browser is perfect. So I’m happy with that. Bluetooth I haven’t try yet, and probably won’t for a while since I have nothing with it at home or at the office.

Second, the form-factor is great. Having a “retractable” Graffiti area is really good, since it leaves room for photos or graphs that need better room that the one offered by the previous Palms.

Other things to comment: good applications, including a nicer Media Player (Pocket Tunes for music). Sound with headphones is good too, although it cannot be compared with my iPod Nano! Even the included Solitaire is nice. Battery is quite good, long lasting and charges fast through the USB cable, even from my old ThinkPad A21 at home.

And now, for the problems: many apps don’t work, thanks to the great improvement, Flash Memory. The new memory model is not necessarily compatible with many shareware and freeware around, and looks like the SD cards have to be reformatted to work correctly (at least, my old SD from the Tungsten E doesn’t work right). Many apps do install, but give problems like hanging the PDA, requiring a soft reset; annoying but not actually harmful. A few old apps, like Cesium (great clock/timer/stopwatch) and the classic masterpiece SF Cave work allright.

As for now, I will use for a couple of weeks before having a definite opinion. But the price is great (299, just like my first Pilot 500 a zillion years ago!). One day or the other someone will produce a software add-on to turn it into a USB drive, something more or less obvious with just 100 megs of internal memory.

My only complaint so far: it came with a fancy clock app, that shown the world and the areas at night and with daylight, but it simply disappeared after I sync it with my old data, going back to the useful but not as nice World Clock. Natively, it comes in many languages, so I can use it in Spanish (translation fine although it has some typos). I do recommend it over the more “home-oriented” Palms like the new Zire. Maybe I’ll come in a while to change the rating. And if someone at Palm does read this, please tell me how to bring the nice Clock back!

Final update, after almost a year of use: My final opinion is that four stars are just right. Why? Well, the old two complaints, not big but anyway relevant: slow turn ons and bad media playing. And the fact that it doesn’t really work with a Mac.

It does takes its time to turn on. I don’t know why. When using the nifty center button just to see what time it is, the time it takes to show the clock is long enough to almost make impossible to see the hour!

And regarding media playing: I agree with some of the reviewers, the included software is not good enough. I disliked the realone player that came with my Tungsten E, and the Kinoma encoder took ages to compress and re-encode content, but at least they didn’t force you to use Microsoft Media Player. This one does. Now I’m using TCPMP although it can be cumbersome to convert video; music playing is fine but better to get a real music player, cause playback quality is second-rate.

And the fact that syncing with a Mac is a complicated and uncomplete affair, unless you’re willing to buy a $30 software like Missing Link, and add other stuff for AvantGo. Palm software for Mac is just adequate if you’re using a Palm Pilot! I’m a recent switcher and I miss the ease and transparent syncing with Windows (actually, the only thing I miss about Windows).

Law
Are you interested in having a smaller day planner? Do you want to listen to music or watch movies on the go? Do you want to do all this and more at a modest price? Do you hesitate to buy another Microsoft branded device? Then the Palm TX may be what you’re looking for.

I want to talk about the general usefulness for the average user. The official Palm TX specs can be found on Palm’s website.
I had read a lot of opinions about laptop replacements. It seems kind of odd that desktop replacements (laptops or notebooks) are themselves being replaced by smaller and smaller devices. The TX has decent speed but has a lot more internal memory than most of the other similarly priced PDA’s, which makes it less of a necessity to have an expansion card, although you’ll need one if you want to watch movies or listen to podcasts or music.

Now to get into some specifics:

PIM–The TX is shipped with Calendar, embedded in Palm Desktop (PD). For your average user, Calendar is quite adequate. I’m not a real mover/shaker when it comes to social networking so I need Calendar to just keep my appointments and have the enough options to categorize the entry. The desktop program has a few more options than the TX program, but you are able to get what you need to be entered either way–desktop or PDA entry.

Email–The TX uses Versamail out of the box. I find that Versamail has minimal but adequate features to use email on the go at wireless locations. You can set up accounts, check email, send or receive attachments, among other things. I had a little trouble at one point with the account settings. I entered my SMTP/POP settings into the TX and could receive email, but I couldn’t send email. I found the user/account settings on the desktop portion of the program, and like Calendar, it seemed to have a few more options to tweak settings and such. Somehow, the entry into the Palm with the SMTP setting had garbled, even after several reentries. I was able to fix it on the desktop, Hotsync and then sending email worked like a charm. I will say I don’t use Versamail all that much. I don’t spend a lot of time near a hotspot unless it’s at home. Then it’s easier to use my regular computer email client.

Internet–This is another function that I don’t use much, but just on occasion if we are eating at Panera or IHOP. The program that the Palm TX uses inherently is Blazer. I find it barely adequate, but when you think about it, browsers are large programs on regular computers. In order to have the wealth of functionality that a regular browser has, then it would likely be too large for a PDA to use effectively. Blazer has all the rudimentary features of a browser (bookmarks, direct address entry, back/forward, home, etc.). Blazer is pretty decent at rendering the simpler webpages. I browse a few forums quite a bit and Blazer does only a fair job at rendering forums. It is fairly fast and will connect easily with public wifi hotspots. There aren’t many options for Palm browsers out there. Opera has one, but it requires you to install Java (which was a little fickle for me) and the Opera/Palm browser was also a bit fickle.

Screen–The screen on the TX is really good! Its resolution is 320×480 (or the other way around if you are in landscape mode…which is what I keep it at.) The colors are great and you can adjust the brightness. I don’t have anything bad to say about the screen.

Contacts–Palm’s address book is another item that it’s probably best and easiest to enter the data on your regular computer. Again, as an average user, Contacts is quite adequate for my needs. It stores the information I need.

Hotsync–With a program like Hotsync, you basically just want it to do its job. It does it quite well….although there are a few hitches that I ran into while setting it up. First, the initial sync has to be done via the cable that is supplied. Once set up, you can store the cable in a drawer, maybe to never use again. From then on, you can sync wirelessly (which only applies if you have an access point, otherwise, keep the cable out). Hotsync over wifi is fast and quite satisfactory. The other big issue I have with the Hotsync program in particular has to do with legacy settings. Hotsync uses what is called conduits to match Palm Desktop (the repository for Calendar, Contacts, Quick Install, and other utilities). The user can control the conduit behavior by right clicking on the Windows taskbar icon for Hotsync and clicking Custom and also on the TX by tapping the menu in Hotsync and tapping Conduit Setup. Both have to be done to assure proper conduit function. The TX includes legacy conduits for older Palm programs. These might go by names such at Address Book, Date Book or Memo Pad, which all have newer versions (names). If both conduits of a type (i.e. Address Book and Contacts) are selected and then a Hotsync is performed, the device can lock up. It takes quite a bit of paring down if you’ve installed very many programs on the Palm, but once trimmed, Hotsync is fast and simple. There are some file functions that I won’t use with Hotsync, like transferring large files. It takes too long and the signal can often be lost during sync. For this purpose, I use a card reader to transfer larger files (mp3′s, pictures or movies) to my TX.

Wifi–We live in a wireless world and the TX has a good wifi setup. Once setup, it connects quickly and does its job. I haven’t had any problems with it.

Bluetooth–I had wondered why Palm would include Bluetooth capability when the TX already had a very good wireless setup. Then, a few months later, I upgraded my wireless phone to a phone that was Bluetooth-enabled. This allowed me to transfer files and such. I know there are more uses for a Bluetooth PDA, but I don’t use them.

Multimedia–This is, honestly, what I spend most of my time doing with my PDA. Since my car stereo isn’t Ipod ready, I plug in my earbuds with my TX playing podcasts. pTunes comes with the TX and is has all the features I need…track/play/pause/stop. It has shuffle and a volume control.
Another thing that makes the TX attractive is being able to watch movies. It takes a bit of preparation, but IMO, it’s worth it. First you have to rip and then encode a movie, which in itself may or may not be legal, depending on what you read and where you live, and I won’t go into how to do it. I use a movie player program called TCPMP. After researching how to do all this, this program seemed to be the easiest to use. If you have good headphones, it’ll give great stereo sound. For watching movies, you’ll definitely need an expansion card.
You can also store pictures and videos on the internal memory or expansion card. The program called Media stores and organizes your pictures and videos.

Ebooks–I love to read. I love the feel of a hardback book in my hands. I love being able to carry a paperback around fairly inconspicuously, but sometimes you just can’t take an actual book with you. At work, when we have downtime, I turn my TX on and continue where I left off reading my current ebook. There are plenty of programs out there for reading ebooks on a Palm. Mobipocket is one that I use frequently. The TX can natively read Word (and Excel) and text documents using Documents to Go. Both programs can be set to scroll a page at a time with the navigating button. Most all ebook formats can be read on the TX except the Microsoft Reader’s lit format.

Buttons, connectors and such–The Palm TX comes with a weighted stylus that feels good in the hands. The power button can be difficult to push if you aren’t paying attention to it, but it’s not that bad. The headphone jack is conveniently placed on the top of the device. The function buttons are well-placed and can be reprogrammed to your own needs, although they do have images on the buttons to suggest what they are preset to. The power jack is on the bottom of the device and must be securely inserted. It can slide out if the power cable is laying at an angle to how the device is laying. I don’t own a cradle. The simple flap cover that comes with the TX is adequate for me, although I have been considering an aftermarket case. The flap cover seems to have a weak point at the fold. Mine, after 4 months, has a crease that isn’t really close to breaking, but probably will, eventually. The flap cover keeps the device relatively slim. The reset button is located on the back of the device. If you buy an aftermarket case, make sure you can get to all the buttons, jacks and plugs.

Battery–I’m quite impressed with the battery on the TX. Although you can’t change it out, it is an internal rechargeable that has good life. After “training” the battery properly after I bought it, I’ve had it last for nearly 3 hours constant use with the wifi being on most of that time. I’ve watched movies on it…in fact, movie watching only uses about a third of the juice from a full battery. That’s without Bluetooth or wifi being on. With pTunes running while I’m driving, I can commute 4 hours in a day, read a little on my breaks at work and have plenty of battery left at the end of the day. I’m quite satisfied with it.

Overall, the Palm TX is a robust mid-priced Palm PDA that has lots of boxed features and programs and the ability to install other programs and games that you buy or download. It is fast, has good connectivity options, plenty of internal memory and has a good battery. It will accept SD or miniSD expansion cards up to at least 4 GB…maybe more. It has a vibrant screen that makes viewing pleasurable. I would highly recommend the TX to home/home office users that want to ditch their paper day planner, or have a good option for personal multimedia.

The drive arrived and was unpacked from its box. I connected the drive to its cable and then plugged the cable into the USB port on my laptop and, Poof!, I had a new 1TB drive of storage space. That’s it. That’s all I had to do.

The drive comes with pre-installed backup software — full then incremental — which you DO NOT have to download and install onto your computer, it’s all self contained. If all you want is to drag and drop files then you can do that, too.

I was able to back up about 7.5 GB of data in half an hour which isn’t bad for an external USB drive using USB 2.0 since I don’t have USB 3.0 available at this time.

The unit itself measures 4.5″ X 3″ X 0.75″ and comes with a 17″ cable. Power for the drive comes from the USB port. My machine is a Toshiba Satellite A105 using Windows 7 Pro.

The drive is simple, compact, and does exactly what it’s supposed to do without any complaints.

A. Non
I hope this review will be helpful for those wondering if the drive is Mac-compatible, since that isn’t mentioned anywhere in the product description.

This drive was absolutely painless to set up… it’s formatted for Windows, but reformatting for Mac is very simple. Plug it in, it pops up on your desktop. Go to Disk Utilities (utilities folder in Applications), choose the drive, then Mac from the drop-down format menu. It reformats the drive quickly and easily.

File transfer is very fast on my MacBook Pro, and it works seamlessly with Time Machine for backups (just choose it as your backup disk when you open the application). The fact that the drive is “future-ready” for USB 3.0 is also a big plus.

It’s hard to believe that 1 TB of storage can come in such a slim package for such a low price. The drive fits in my breast pocket.

By comparison, this week I bought a Seagate FreeAgent Go-Flex 1TB external hard-drive that’s priced the same (at least at the discount wholesalers where I shop). However, it’s much bigger, bulkier, and is powered by an adapter rather than getting it’s power from USB port, the way the HP does. On top of that, the Seagate constantly ejects itself, runs hot, and doesn’t power off when the computer shuts down. It has been a pain-in-the-butt from the get-go.

But the HP has been a pleasure from the instant I opened it from the box and plugged it in. It’s fast, slim, easy-to-use, and gentle on the credit card. And since I’m not a tech-head, those are exactly the qualities I am looking for in a storage solution. It’s USB 3.0-ready and it comes with a 2-year, limited warranty. What more do you need to know? I love it and I’m sure you will, too.

The computer would turn on without video which continued after shutting the computer down, removing the PNY card and using the board’s own video out. In order to get video I had to reset the Bios on the board using a pin hard switch option. After wasting about 4 hours on this, I flashed the most recent bios, something that I should have done before loading Windows which solved the problem. Now the board works flawlessly. This is not the first issue with Asus and their bios, however. In my opinion they are shipping boards in which the bios are too immature and are unstable. I usually don’t flash bios unless I have stability problems, but I have now changed my mind and maybe will save you some issues if you own this board (or any Asus board for that matter). Flash the bios first, especially if it is a new build before you load an OS system. The flash can be so radical in changes to how the board processes information that it can render your OS unusable forcing re-install.

I also agree with previous reviewer that memory is too close to the CPU, affecting aftermarket cooling options.

My cooler master fan hangs over one of the memory slots. I will end up buying shorter memory, so I can use the last memory slot. I would suggest you purchase a fan that fits within the confines of the processor. The Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 120mm is too bulky for this main board.

Ryan
I have mostly used ASUS motherboards for the past 12 years or so. While gathering a parts list for a recent build (decided to go with an AMD FX-4100 CPU), This board was one of the more well reviewed units on this and a couple of other websites. So, I ordered it along with the CPU, and 8GB of memory to put together on the weekend (yesterday). Upon assembly, the system would not post, it wouldn’t even stay running very long. Just as an experiment, I put a PCIe video card on the board, and managed to boot into the bios (once), repeated attempts failed.

Following this event, I did not want to wait on the round trip for a replacement board, so I went to a local big box store (begins with F and rhymes with tries) to get the same motherboard. Usually you will see 1-2 return units of a given motherboard on the shelves. For this model, all 7 units in stock were returned units. I decided to get another motherboard. It’s also worth noting the baby brother (mATX version) of this board also had a lot of returned units in stock.

Will definitely take this into consideration regarding future purchases of ASUS products. I’m uncertain if it was simply a bad manufacturing run, but it isn’t at all good. I am returning this board to Amazon.

Photographing red deer stags is one of those magical events in life. My good friend and I took up an chance lately to go and spend galore time taking pictures of red deer in the wild. These deer make great subject matter for photography, but when rutting season is upon them the stags tend to take on a altogether dissimilar personality.

Photography Tip – How to Photograph Large Wildlife and How Not To

With any photography mission the challenge is always going to be to get as close to the subject matter as is (A) safe and (B) possible, (obviously without permitting yourself to get into any prompt danger) in some cases this is many times achieved by using a telephoto zoom lens, but as is more many times the case getting closer means clearer and more elaborated pictures.

Always have your camera strap round your neck, this way if you have to abruptly take flight you will stand less probability of dropping it, but be sure if you do have to run that you place one hand on the camera other than as supposed or expected you stand a good probability of it bashing you in the chin or worse.

The photo probability was a good one for us as we had bright sunshine and a warm day so we could use an 18 to 70mm wide angle lens with the camera settings left on automatic, though on reflectiveness I wish I had been using my 28 to 200mm lens.

If you are photographing animals, great care ought to be taken to know the safety levels and whether they have times of the year that they are not approachable at all.

Red Deer Stags are majestic animals and distinctly have sufficient power and energy to take on and defeat assorted people at once if they so desired. Most of the year they would be happy for you to get up real close to take galore great pictures, but when rutting season arrives you must surely keep a safe distance amongst you and them.

Getting as close as we did to the Stags surely set our heart racing as they fixed their glimpse at us and started scuffing the ground as if to charge, then swaying their antlers side to side while stabbing the ground with them. This was more or less unnerving, but a outstanding chance to capture a good deal of outstanding red deer pictures.

On more than one occasion we found ourselves a little more than uncomfortably close and ended up walking away peculiarly fast while attempting not to run until at a safe sufficient distance to do so.

My greatest tip for photographing these outstanding creatures is make sure it is not the rutting season or you could surely end up with a lot more than a few good pictures as they do not tolerate any kind of friendly attention at this time.

Try to approach from downwind where possible this often times gives a little edge and could secure a good deal of red deer pictures that you might not have managed had you not have done so. Wear camouflage costume and carry as little as is possible. Try to have a little base set-up where you may leave the bulk of your instrumentation and possessions.

The Amzer Jelly Case is made out of 100% premium silicone and is a great, light-weight option for protecting your HTC EVO 4G. The lasting silicone absorbs any shock your HTC EVO 4G may receive from any accidental drops or bumps, keeping it just like new. The smooth silicone gives you a sure and lasting grip on your HTC EVO 4G and minimizes sliding on flat surfaces. You have full access to your HTC EVO 4G without removing it from the case. The Jelly Case is genuinely like a second skin and a ought to have accessory!

Prior to this case I had a Seidio Innocase on my EVO. The Seidio is a semi-hard case that comes in two pieces and slides onto the EVO. I like this Amzer silicon case much better than the Seidio and the silicon case is now the one I keep on my phone all the time. The Seidio case was to creaky and had enough play in the case to be annoying. Also it seemed to trap dirt/dust under the edges easier than this silicon case.

The Amzer silicon case fits the EVO well and the LED notification light is fully visible. With the Seidio part of my notification light was covered by the case. All ports/buttons are easily accessible with the Amzer case. The case has a nice texture to it and feels secure in my hand. There is also a pattern in the cast, look at the pictures of the back to see what I’m talking about, and there are small raised areas on the corners. I actually like this as it helps me hold the phone when I am using it in a horizontal position.

Overall this is a really nice silicone case for the EVO. I am very happy with it and at $9.95 I feel it is a very fair price. It fits well for a silicon case and gives me grip when holding my EVO. Recommended.

They were great at first, but after about a month, both of them have stretched out to the point that they no longer fit on the phone. Neither case was subjected to the inside of a hot car or any similar harsh conditions, either. I think all the five star ratings for this case came from people who haven’t had them very long. I’ve ordered a different case to replace this one.

39 of 41 people found the following review helpful.
Solid Protection
By MacAck
When I first purchased the Evo 4g, I knew two things straight-away:

1) The phone feels relatively fragile, hence the need for a case, and
2) The cases that the Sprint store sells are overpriced crap.

After reading some online reviews from the early adopters of the phone and various cases, I decided that the case that I wanted was the Seidio Innocase Active Case for HTC EVO 4G – Limited Edition because it appeared to offer the most protection for my shiny new toy.

Unfortunately, at the time of my purchase, the Innocase was on back-order for almost a month. I bought this Amzer case as a holdover (i.e. it was in stock and Prime-eligible) to protect my phone until my “real” case arrived.

Immediately upon receiving this case I put it on my phone. The fit and finish are pretty good for a sub-$10 case. The case in no way interferes with the stand built into the back of the phone, which I was a little concerned with. The case fits pretty snugly on the phone and offers protection to both the screen and the camera lens since it extends slightly beyond both. I do wish that the fit was a little tighter (dust seems to find a way in behind the case), but I can’t argue with the protection.

I know the protection works because this weekend I dropped my phone from a decent height (around 5 feet) onto a tile floor. The phone fell straight down on to the screen with a muffled thud. I picked it up and wiped the screen off on my shirt, and noticed that there were no cracks in the screen. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that I hadn’t even scratched the screen.

Bottom line is this — do I think that this case is perfect? The dust issue bothers me so I can’t say yes. Do I think that this case offers the protection advertised and is worth every cent? Absolutely. Whether you are purchasing the case for full time use or (like me) are purchasing it as a holdover until another arrives, I do not think you’ll regret it. Who knows — I may even continue using this case once the Innocase arrives!

Also one of the first things i did on it was install the new star wars game. only took about an hour and a half to download the game, took like 4-5 on my old one. the game runs perfect on highest settings, real smooth game play and no problems with the computer overheating at all. awesome computer

The last review said that some parts were loose which was most likely a shipping problem(also mine did look like the image). An amazing, solid computer can’t beat! I found that the 12 gigs of RAM is good if you run alot of programs but the 8 gig Microtel computer is better for people who don’t really want to spend that extra 20 or 30 dollars. Other than that it can run games perfectly averaging about 60 FPS for my most demanding games. It does come with game performance programs ex. gamebooster 3.1. Also come with AMD overdrive and Fusion, I haven’t had the chance to test them out yet, but you won’t have any problems with the processor or the videocard(I don’t reccomend using the max clock settings as 3.4 GHz is high enough to run pretty anything when it comes to games). If your looking for a solid computer with a good processor, videocard, and RAM, this or the Microtel AMTI9025 is what your looking for(depending if your real picky with money).

I had been looking at various gaming computers for months before finding this. I had found many computer with equivalent specs but all of them were over $1,000. I was surprised at the specs, 12 GB of ddr3 RAM, a 1 GB graphics card with Directx11, and a massive 1 TB HDD. My first thought was that it was “too good to be true” but after buying this i have changed my mind. I’m able to shadowbox 2 World of Warcraft screens at max graphics and 16X anti aliasing. I can also play Dragon age II and Left4Dead (1 and 2) on max graphics settings.
But enough about the graphics. the 12 GB of RAM allows me to have Camtasia studio, a ventrillo server, and a WoW server run at the same time and use about 20% of my RAM and 16% of the Quad-Core Processor.
The only flaw that I’ve found is that the graphics card seems to get hot quickly, however this can be fixed by turning up the fan speed in the NVIDA Control Panel.
This is a great PC at a great price.

7421 of 7552 people found the following review helpful.
Fantastic device – pick your Kindle!
By FreeSpirit
Having been a little overwhelmed by the choices between all the new Kindles and which one to get, I ordered this new basic $79 Kindle first to take for a spin. So far, I like what I see. I also own a Kindle 3 so that’s the only device I can really compare it to at this time (I think a comparison between other tablets and this Kindle is meaningless, this device is all about content and delivery):

1. Form-factor – Compared to the Kindle 3, this Kindle feels more compact, lighter and easier to hold. My hands wrap around this better than K3. Reading books for a few hours at a stretch will be easier on this device compared to the K3. It is the lightest such device I have used compared to all previous Kindles and other tablets.

2. Screen – I personally like the fact that there are no keys on the device and that keys come up on the screen when you need them. Delivers a better overall reading experience. However, navigating through the on-screen keyboard with the 5-way controller can be taxing if you need to do a lot of searching, and you might miss the full physical keyboard. I hardly search on the Kindle itself, I search for books on my laptop so this is a non-issue.

3. Price! – At $79, you can’t go wrong. Compared to buying paperback or hardcover editions, you will recover the cost of this in a matter of a few months because most Kindle content is priced cheaper than print editions (and you get it instantly, and can access it wherever you are). Not to mention all the free Kindle downloads available in the catalog.

4. Display – almost the same E-ink display at the K3. No glare no reflection. You can sit in bright sunlight and read it just like a book. Page turns seem a lot faster on this compared to the K3. Screen size of the Kindle 3, this new Kindle, and the Touch is exactly the same in size.

5. Wi-Fi – this can be a pro or a con (no 3G) depending on a user’s personal preference. If you travel often and would like to be able to download content anywhere without worrying about getting a wi-fi connection, you’re better off sticking with the K3 or waiting for the Touch/Fire. For me, 3G is not a major issue.

6. Text to Speech and Audiobooks – These two features are lacking in this device. I personally have never used these features on my K3. If you listen to audiobooks or TTS or music on your Kindle, again the K3/Touch/Fire might be better options.

7. Storage – this device can store 2GB which they claim is approximately 1400 books. For me, that’s a massive storage capacity and it will be years before I get close to that capacity. Again, if you download books occasionally and have a moderate Kindle downloaded content on your device, 2GB is plenty. Of course, think ahead and see how much you would expect to download in the coming 2 years (I am assuming the device will be outdated and replaced within this time-frame).

8. Battery life – too early to tell but Kindle battery life tends to be great. Specs state that the battery life of this device is 1 month compared to 2 months for the Touch or K3. 1 month is plenty (Android phones need to be charged every hour!). At least I know that if I’m going on a long flight, this device won’t need charging if I charge it up in advance.

9. Power adapter – this Kindle does not come with a power adapter, only a USB charging cable. You can either buy it separately for $8-10, or use your existing USB power adapter. Any USB adapter would work with the charging cable (previous Kindle versions, Apple’s portable devices, and most HTC phones, come with a standard USB power adapter that would work for this device). There are also plenty of $2-3 adapters available here if you search for USB chargers.

Bottom line – the choice between this basic Kindle, the K3 Keyboard, the Touch, and the Fire is really a personal preference. This device itself is meant for the minimalist Kindle user who, like me, reads say a 2-3 books a month, wants a device comfortable to hold, and doesn’t need any fancy bells and whistles on the device. I guess it depends on what you use your Kindle for. If it’s just the basics, this is the perfect device to get.

In my humble opinion, the choices:

(i) If you have a DX or an old Kindle version, or if you don’t have a Kindle yet and are an average book-reader, this is definitely the one to get – baseline model that is affordable and is a pure e-reader.

(ii) If you have Kindle 3 and don’t really need an upgrade, I recommend sticking with the K3, it’s a better device than this one in terms of features. If you do need to upgrade, the Touch is probably a better option because of all the additional features, at a small incremental cost.

(iii) If you’re looking for the loaded full-on Amazon content experience with access to all the apps, streaming audio and video, and playing the “strangely therapeutic” Fruit Ninja, wait for the Fire!

I sincerely hope this review helps you decide whether this Kindle is right for you. If you are still unable to make a decision, it may be worthwhile to wait for the Touch and Fire to be released, and see the reviews on those devices before making a final decision.

2914 of 2987 people found the following review helpful.
Facts to Consider when Buying This Kindle Instead of Others
By J. Ts
First off, I received my new Kindle this morning. I previously owned the Kindle Keyboard, but actually really didn’t like the keyboard or the way the buttons were pressed together. I’m not a fan of touch screens so I bought this one.

There are a few things to know about this particular Kindle that can help you decide if it’s right for you…

Here is a list of things to know about this Kindle.

1. You’ll be using an onscreen keyboard with the 5-Way Controller. This is not a problem for setting up WiFi and a little writing but if you are an avid note-taker or do a lot of writing with your Kindle, you might want to opt for the Kindle Keyboard.
2. NO AUDIO – If you are planning on listening to audiobooks, Mp3s, or Text to Speech on your Kindle, this is not the device for you. There is not even a headphone jack, so there is absolutely no audio support.
3. 2GB! This device has 2GB of storage, which is half of all the others… if you seriously need to keep over 1,400 books or so on your Kindle, you should opt for one of the others, all of which have 4GB. I only keep a hundred or so books on mine and the rest are up in the Amazon Cloud waiting for convenient download.
4. There’s no 3G version but the WiFi works just fine.
5. There is a shorter battery life. Amazon reports the battery life is only one month of reading, compared with the others that clock in at two months. If you are going to be away from electricity for over a month, first of all RESPECT!, second of all, you may want a Kindle that has the 2 month battery life.
6. It’s lighter than all the other versions. It weighs in at just under 6oz (170g). The closest competition is the Kindle Touch which is about 7.5oz.
7. It has 5 buttons on the face at the bottom. In the middle is the big 5-Way Controller button as found on other Kindles. There are two small buttons on either side of this. On the left side, from left to right are the “Back” button and the “Keyboard” button. The “Back” button is the same as on other Kindles. The “Keyboard” button calls the onscreen keyboard onto the screen. On the right side of the 5-Way Controller are (again, from left to right) the “Menu” button, and the “Home” button. The “Next Page” and “Previous Page” buttons are the same as on other Kindles.
8. Because of the above 5 buttons, I find it much easier to use than the Kindle Keyboard. On the Kindle Keyboard, the “Back” button was right below the 5-Way Controller, and I accidentally hit it on more than one occasion.
9. On the bottom there is only the mini-USB port, the charging light, and the On-Off Button.
10. There are not a whole lot of covers available for this Kindle yet. (Amazon’s won’t be available until the end of October.)

As for reading, and as a pure reading device. It is awesome… in fact, without the keyboard, audio, and other features I don’t need. This is actually the best one for someone like me who just wants to read.

I’ve already successfully transferred my library, downloaded books over WiFi, and borrowed library books through the Overdrive Library eBooks System. My only small point of dissatisfaction is that there are so few good covers and accessories right now (though there ARE some available that look pretty good).

All in all, I believe this is the BEST of all the Kindles currently available. Only consider others if you:
a. Really want the touch screen version.
b. Need audio.
c. Need 4GB
d. Need a big Kindle DX.
e. Take a lot of notes or do a lot of writing that requires a keyboard.
f. Prefer the design of another version.
g. Need more than a month’s battery power.

Hope this helps someone make a good decision!

(Brief update: I love this Kindle, but right now the scarcity of good, inexpensive covers for it is a little troubling. The Amazon made leather one with light won’t be available until November or so and there are currently no inexpensive ones to use in the interim. I’ll just have to use it gently for a month or so.)

Update on cases:
I mentioned this in the comments section, but I’ll repeat it here for people who can’t yet find a good case -

Checking the specifications for the Kindle, Nook Touch, and Kobo:
Nook Touch
6.5 x 5 x 0.5 inches
Kobo Reader
6.5 X 4.5 inches
Kindle (4th Generation)
6.5 x 4.5 x 0.34 inches

It looks like the Kobo is about exactly the same size and the Nook Touch is slightly longer. If you need a case but can’t find one that you like yet, it may be worth a little hunting to see if a nook or kobo case or cover might fit the bill.

Extremely legible display, snappy performance
By M. Erb
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RWG7OQ5NMGUMW I was thrilled to receive my new Kindle. I ordered it Sep 28, chose overnight shipping and it arrived (Sep 29) just a few minutes ago. Usually I use a device for a while before reviewing it. In this case, I felt it was important to do a quick review right away because if it can help you in your purchasing decision, so much the better.

If you are a little perplexed with all the various Kindle models and are wondering if this Is the Kindle for you, here are a few questions for you to consider…

1. Do you need text to speech capability or have the desire to listen to mp3′s on your Kindle? If you can live without that, then proceed. This Kindle does not have a speaker thus is not capable of text to speech or playing sounds of any kind including mp3′s.

2. Is color important to you? This is not a color Kindle, it is gray-scale. If you are mostly wanting to read books then this will work for you exceedingly well. The e-ink screen is gorgeous, sharp and provides the ability to change font size, font face and line spacing. It even displays photos quite nicely, but in gray-scale. And you can even zoom in on images.

3. Is a physical keyboard a necessity for you? If you like to make notes and annotations while reading, you may want to look at another model Kindle that has a physical keyboard. Although this Kindle has a screen-based keyboard, it is tedious to type more than a few words or URL’s. It works very well for minimal typing but it’s not for you if you need more than that.

4. Is compact size important for you? Then this is the one to get. It’s thin, light and diminutive in size. Slips easily into a purse, pocket or inside pocket. It is so light which makes holding and reading with one hand for longer periods of time very easy.

5. Do you want to be able to occasionally use a web browser to access a web site? Well surprise surprise, you can do that on this Kindle. It’s an “experimental” feature but it works quite well. It’s been experimental for years, so I’m not quite sure why it’s still labeled experimental. But in any case you can visit websites, save bookmarks and it works.

I also own the original Kindle with the SD card slot. Compared to the original Kindle, this new one is svelte. Thinner, lighter and notably, the e-ink on this new Kindle is vastly improved. In low interior lighting with gray overcast lighting outside, I’m able to easily read the Kindle. It is amazing how the screen almost glows, as if it were backlit. Of course it is not backlit and in fact will not work in the dark. But if you have a small reading light, that solves that problem. Otherwise in most other situations you will pleased with the excellent sharpness and clarity of the Kindle text.

Page “turning” was very snappy to me especially when compared to my old Kindle. The black page flash that occurs on every page turn on the old Kindle does not occur nearly as frequently with the new Kindle. It now occurs after every 5 page turns.

The fact that there is no physical keyboard means that this Kindle is absolutely the easiest to carry Kindle ever. Fits nicely in the hand and the slightly grippy surface makes you feel secure in holding it… it will not easily slip out of your hand.

Setup was a breeze. The Kindle immediately identified my Wi-Fi network and as soon as I entered my password using the onscreen keyboard, I was good to go. Signal strength indicated very high on the Kindle and I did not notice any degradation in signal no matter how I handled it.

As concerns the onscreen keyboard, it was easy and intuitive to use. I don’t expect to have to use it very often and for me I’d rather have no physical keyboard because that makes the Kindle smaller and easier to pack and go.

You still get the typical Kindle tools, such as Highlighting, Notes, Annotations, Public Notes and a few others. You can upload PDF and TXT files and view them. You can easily transfer prior Kindle purchases to your new Kindle. You have the ability to create “collections” Once you’ve created a collection, you add items to it and this is a great way to organize many books.

I have not had this model long enough to comment on battery life, but I’m sure that based on my previous Kindle and the specifications that it will excel. I believe that reading 1/2 hour a day will let you go a month before needing a charge if Wi-Fi is off. That’s pretty awesome. It is charged via the included USB cable and that can be from your computer or via an AC to USB power adapter, or in-car power port USB adapter.

And don’t worry that the memory has decreased in this Kindle. There is still more than enough memory to hold well over 1000 books. And you archive books too which means they are just a click and a few seconds away from being downloaded back to your Kindle from the Amazon Cloud.

Regarding the ads… they are not objectionable. In fact (don’t tell this to the advertisers) I didn’t even notice that there was an advertisement on the home screen until I deliberately looked for it. It takes up just a small portion of the bottom of the screen and is no taller than an inch in height. I don’t know for sure whether all ads are the same size but the one I’m looking at is very unobtrusive. The screensaver ads are full page and don’t bother me at all. And of course, you may just end up getting a good deal on something. I LIKE the ads. Just today I got a couple from an ad that saves me $5 on a $10 Amazon purchase in addition to my choice of a selected list of Mystery/Thriller books for only $1. Love the deals!

I think Amazon has another winner on its hands with this ad-supported Kindle. You just can’t beat it for reading and I’m so glad I got it.

If you have any questions please leave a comment and I’ll do my best to answer them.

UPDATE: 10/16/2011 – I had the opportunity to compare the display of my new Kindle with that of a friends who had a Kindle with keyboard. I’m not sure how old his is, but his display actually had a somewhat lighter colored background which made the legibility slightly better in my opinion. I was quite happy with the clarity, sharpness and contrast of my new Kindle until I compared with him. Now I’m a little conflicted. It’s still great, don’t get me wrong, But it’s not an improvement necessarily over the previous generation as far as I can tell. It’s also possible that there are variations in the e-ink display depending on the luck of the draw. I may question Amazon about this and will report back here if I do. I’d still get this in a heartbeat, but just wanted to let you know about the contrast issue.

UPDATE: 10/17/2011 – There is a new firmware update for the Kindle that addresses the page refresh issue. The new version is 4.0.1 If installed, you will see an additional option in the Settings panel on page 3 called “Page Refresh.” This allows you to have the Kindle refresh the page at each page turn (the screen flashes black briefly.) Otherwise the Kindle will not refresh the page until after each 5 page turns.

UPDATE: 10/19/2011 – I called Amazon Kindle Support to discuss the screen darkness issue I mentioned above. They said they’d send a replacement which I’ve just received. I’m happy to say that the screen background is in fact -slightly- lighter in color on the new Kindle I just received. I’m happy and probably would have still been happy had I not replaced it. But at least I am psychologically satisfied now. The difference in background color was extremely subtle so I wouldn’t worry at all about it if you are happy with your newly purchased $79 Kindle. However there do seem to be some circulating that are more obviously darker and if yours is one of those, then contact Amazon.

UPDATE: 12/6/2011 – Wow, the way these specials offers are going, this Kindle is going to end up being free. I just got another $10 Amazon gift card for $5 the other day. Plus a free Audible Audiobook and 50% off a Kindle cover. Loving the special offers.
