Poor Product – No Quality Control

I received a brand new CF-U1 unit from Panasonic. It had a bright green frozen pixel in the middle of the LCD screen. I sent it back (the next day), however Panasonic did not replace it, they repaired it. When the unit came back it arrived with no less than ten highly visible specks of dust beneath the LCD touch panel (including a quarter inch long hair in the middle of the LCD, ironically almost exactly where the frozen pixel was). The dust was obviously introduced when the screen was replaced, it can only be removed by opening the whole machine up again.

What this has established beyond any doubt is that:

1) Panasonic’s quality control, with respect to their ToughBooks at least, is severely lacking: certainly the LCD screens are NOT part of any quality control test.

2) Panasonic will not replace brand new faulty or DOA units, they will attempt to repair them.

3) Panasonic does not conduct repairs in a ‘clean room’ & does not even conduct rudimentary quality control tests after such repairs have been conducted.

The CF-U1 is essentially a netbook that comes with the price tag of a high-end laptop. One would ordinarily think the price would afford a high level of quality also but unfortunately this is not the case. After this fiasco I would not even accept a ToughBook as a gift. Avoid at all costs, if your ToughBook fails (or even arrives faulty) you’ll be in a world of hurt. Contact me for photos of the above problems.
